Evangelion 2.22 Hits the East, Quality Rips in the Wild
Evangelion 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance hit the DVD/Blu-ray shelves in Asia on Wednesday. To eager Eva fans in the west this means they’ll finally be able to watch the second installment of the Rebuild saga in crisp resolution, either by importing or snatching a DVDrip from the corners of the Internet.
Since early in the week quality DVD/BDrips have been trickling onto the web. Some without English subtitles, others using unsynchronized fansubs from the early and crumby CAM leaks (2.22 has new scenes). Private torrent sites are just beginning to be updated with proper releases. Soon quality rips will be widespread.
Those interested in importing 2.22, beware that the Japanese release lacks English subtitles. For subs you’ll want the Hong Kong release.
Or you can wait another year (or two) for the official North American/European release. Judging by how long it took Evangelion 1.0 to get to the states, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see a Region 1 DVD/Blu-ray of 2.22 before 2011.
Reminder
Evanglion 1.0 DVD release dates….
Japan: April 28, 2008
North America: Nov 17, 2009
A 19 month wait. = (
Giant Unit-01 due in July!
it’s almost no surprise that a real giant EVA (as opposed to the Virtual one) would be built, especially with the new rendition of the giant Gundam going up soon and the new Evangelion movies on the horizon. However, unlike the RX-78, this will be only be a bust of the EVA. While having a full sized Unit-01 would be cool, this bust will include a full sized cockpit. Tokyo Loli Ban Will Include Evangelion
It’s a proposal, not law… as of now, hopefully ever.
Basically, it would keep the slightest depictions of minors in sexual situations from those under 18.
Sankaku Complex:
The authors of the Tokyo loli ban have been busily trying to quell a storm of criticism by “clarifying” their proposal in a way which still allows them to get as much of it through as possible, and in the process appear to have slipped up and claimed that Evangelion’s raunchier scenes would not be banned, despite having just explained in the same document that similar scenes would be banned as harmful to minors in all but “adult” publications.
….
Evangelion in fact includes scenes of masturbation and similar, meaning it would likely fall squarely within the remit of the ban – Tokyo would thus legally require Evangelion DVDs and manga to be sat in the adult section along with “hardcore” pornography, likely a death knell for sales and sure to have a chilling effect on any future titles intended to reach a wider audience.
Of course, it makes no sense to associate this scene with hardcore porn. It’s a crucial look at Shinji’s broken pyche. His emotions are so disturbed that he loses sight of the conventional boundaries he once adhered to. The accidental reveal of Auska’s breasts pushes him to do something he would not have done in his normal state: masturbate to a comatose Asuka. Confused, Shinji laments, “I’m so fucked up.”

Reminder: Evangelion 1.0 now out on DVD in NA
Evangelion: 1.01 You Are (Not) Alone is now official available on DVD in North American.
Though I’m waiting for the North American Blu-ray release. When that comes out, I don’t know. And I do hope to have a Blu-ray player (PS3?) by then.
